“The power to make your own righteous path in life”- (Interview with Shapes of Race Cars)

Q: For people who don’t know where did your band name come from?

A: I was making fun of my girlfriend (at the time) for eating honey-nut cheerios in my bed. She defended herself by saying “No, they’re Shapes of Race Cars!” because apparently all the little “o’s” were pressed into race car shapes in honor of some NASCAR event or some such thing.

We’d been dwelling on a name for our new band for a while and Shapes of Race Cars was it.

Q: Why did you guys decide to start a band?

A: It’s incredibly cliché, but I’ve realized, in our case, it’s absolutely true – because we are rebellious. Not like guys who start fights in parking lots, but like guys that rage and laugh at certain things that we are made to believe are important and “normal” in society.

It was also the only thing we were good at.

Q: What bands inspire you guys to make music?

A: Iggy Pop, and his boyfriend(s) David Bowie, T-Rex and Lou Reed. Stiv Bators on the one hand, but also very much Adam Ant in my case.

Then there’s Anthony and the Johnsons, The White Rabbits, Interpol and the Yeah, Yeah Yeas too. It’s sooooo much.

Also the entire lifetime of Judy Garland.

Q: If you guys could play a show anywhere in the world where would you play?

A: We want to headline the Coachella festival.

Q: What has been the most exciting thing that has happened to you guys since you’ve been a band?

A: Being on the Warped Tour w/Katy Perry was actually really fun. Even though we’re not part of that kind of Mall Punk, pop scene, everyone was so nice – especially the kids who come out every day hungry for good music, no matter what the style.

Q: Is there anything you want your fans to take from your music?

A: A sense of self-determination – the power to make your own righteous path in life and love, and relish it without fear.

Q: Is there anything as a band you guys hope to accomplish?

A: We really want to get to a wider U.S. audience – TV placements have been great for that, but live is so much more fun. Europe as well, particularly the UK, which we love.

Q: What is your favorite song from your album Beauty Beat?

A: It changes, but right now it’s a song called “Boring Villains”. It says a lot about our philosophy.

Q: How long did it take you guys to finish the album?

A: We did this album in about 3 months… not counting all the time you can’t measure when the songs first started coming into being.

Q: Are you guys going to be touring anytime soon?

A: We are hoping to be in a venue near you, or on a TV station in your broadcast area very soon!!
